UFC Perth: Salkilld smokes Dariush as Aussies dominate, Prates upsets JDM
Quillan Salkilld delivered the loudest moment of his career in front of a hometown crowd, finishing Beneil Dariush in a round. Carlos Prates ruined the night up top with a brutal third-round stoppage of Jack Della Maddalena - but Australians still owned the card.

RAC Arena got the night it wanted. UFC Fight Night Perth on Saturday 2 May delivered the biggest moment of Quillan Salkilld's career, two finishes from heavy-handed home heavyweights, and a near-clean sweep for Australian fighters across the card. The only sour note was the main event, where Carlos Prates blew through former champion Jack Della Maddalena to end the night.
Salkilld stops Dariush in a round
The Perth lightweight got dropped early, climbed back into it, and then took it away. Salkilld finished Beneil Dariush by TKO at 3:29 of the first round - a statement win against a former top-five lightweight, in front of his home crowd. Watch the finishing sequence below.
It was the loudest reaction of the night. Dariush had been the heavy favourite and is twice Salkilld's age in fight experience. Salkilld walked through an early knockdown, found his range, and then pieced him up with combinations until the referee stepped in. Hometown advantage rarely looks this clean.
Main event: Prates ruins the JDM coronation
The plan for the Perth crowd was a hometown win for former welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena. Carlos Prates didn't read the script. The Brazilian striker walked Della Maddalena down through the first two rounds and finished him by TKO at 3:17 of the third with a clean barrage of strikes. It is Della Maddalena's most decisive loss in the UFC and instantly resets the welterweight title picture - Prates now holds a finish over a former champion in his own backyard.
Tuivasa swept by Sutherland
Tai Tuivasa lost a unanimous decision to fellow Australian heavyweight Louie Sutherland - and the cards (30-26, 30-26, 30-26) were as one-sided as a three-round fight gets. Sutherland controlled the cage, mixed in level changes, and never let Tuivasa load up the right hand that has finished half his career. Tuivasa's UFC future is now an open question after another setback in a long downturn.
Aussie wins all night
Beyond Salkilld and Sutherland, Australians ran the rest of the card. Steve Erceg, the Perth-based flyweight contender, edged Tim Elliott on the cards (29-28 across the board) after settling into his striking in the second. Heavyweight Brando Peričić finished Shamil Gaziev by KO at 3:44 of the second round - a real statement in a thin division. Marwan Rahiki opened the main card with a first-round TKO of Ollie Schmid at 2:47.
On the prelims, Junior Tafa stopped Kevin Christian with ground elbows in the first, Jacob Malkoun grinded out a unanimous decision over Gerald Meerschaert, Colby Thicknesse took a unanimous decision over Vince Morales, and Wes Schultz locked up a third-round guillotine on Ben Johnston. Jonathan Micallef edged Themba Gorimbo by split decision. Add it up and the Australian record for the night sits at roughly nine wins to two losses, with the only home losses being Della Maddalena up top and Tuivasa.

What it means for Perth
UFC Perth shows what every Perth coach already knew: this city has more legitimate UFC-level talent per capita than its share of fight cards suggests. Salkilld is now a name the lightweight division has to take seriously. Erceg keeps building a case at flyweight. Sutherland and Peričić quietly join the Australian heavyweight conversation alongside Tafa. Della Maddalena drops back to a divisional rebuild. Local gyms - Scrappy MMA, Eternal MMA, Hammers and the rest - get to point at a Saturday night where their disciplines were on prime-time UFC television.
The next Perth card cannot come soon enough. If you train, this is the week to bring a friend to your gym. If you've been thinking about your first class, browse the directory and find a room that fits. Every name on this card started where you'd start.
