Your first class: what actually happens
A minute-by-minute walkthrough of a typical first combat class in Perth - what you wear, who you talk to, what hurts, and what you do if you feel completely out of place.
The hardest part of starting a combat sport isn't the training - it's walking through the door the first time. Here's what actually happens, so you can show up prepared.
Before you go
- Message the gym on Instagram or fill in their trial form. Every gym in our directory marked 'free trial' will book you in same-week.
- Ask what to bring. Most beginner classes need nothing - gloves and wraps are loan or optional for the first class. BJJ needs a gi (most gyms loan one for a trial).
- Eat 1-2 hours before. Not right before. Not 6 hours before. Hydrate.
Arriving
Aim for 15 minutes early. You'll sign a waiver, meet the coach, and get shown where to put your stuff. Every gym in Perth we've been to is welcoming - the 'tough guy' coach is mostly a movie trope. Real coaches are professionals running a business.
The class itself
A beginner class is usually 45-60 minutes. You'll warm up (5-10 min skipping, shadow movement), drill technique (20-30 min), and finish with rounds on pads or light rolling (10-15 min). You will not spar full contact on your first day at any legitimate gym.
What hurts
Expect your calves and shoulders to be sore for 48 hours. This is normal. Expect your ego to take a hit - you'll feel uncoordinated and gassed. This is also normal. Everyone was there.
The 24-hour rule
If you felt awful after your first class, try the same gym once more before writing it off. First-class nerves distort everything. If you felt awful the second time too, try a different gym. There are 40+ options in Perth.
